Wallpaper. - "I Got Soul, I'm So Wasted" directed by Jason Zada

A kinetic and stunning music video captured in one-take with all FX performed in-camera. So 90s but so cool.

And for those of you who don't know Jason Zada. He's a Director (reel + work) and Digital Evangelist that tells visual and compelling stories in a variety of different medias. Jason was previously the Founder and ECD of EVB. Jason is currently representated by Tool in US for commercials.

Honda Let It Shine Vimeo Experience

Although not used in the fullest possible way, this is a good example of how Vimeo can help you enhance your viewers' experience. If only they had integrated more behind-the-scenes elements & interaction it would have been an even nicer experience.

Someone should make an ad out of this: Eddie Izzard - Death Star Canteen

Lego is hot and its animation possibilities are endless. Despite the fact that rights might have to be negotiated with Lego in order to make a TV commercial out of it, I'm sure that those restrictions are less viable in a viral context... Checkout YouTube for more examples of funny Lego anims.

Puma L.I.F.T. by Rupert Sanders (MJZ) for Droga5

When a projection installation is the backdrop for a TV-commercial, this is how beautiful it gets in the hands of visionary director Rupert Sanders.

Of course the technique has been used before, although in a less mind-blowing way, by another directing-wonder: Daniel Kleinman. Watch it here:

Brussels agency Famous creates the world's first user-generated (stopmotion) commercial

Can't get any more original than this from a production point of view. FamousBrussels will create the world's first user-generated stopmotion commercial. How they plan to do this is demonstrated in an explanatory commercial that was launched on Belgian television today.

In short: a 472-frames storyboard for the commercial was developed but not filmed. People can select one of the frames on the storyboard on the Generation Movie Project website and are then asked to take a picture that resembles this frame as much as possible. Once all frames are 'filled' with a picture the film is complete and will then finally be broadcasted on television in its definitive form. 100% user-generation. 100% genius idea.

Good viral films don't have to cost a dime

I regularly see scripts for viral films that seem to be written for television instead, demanding a television budget as well. But the internet has its own rules, it's all about getting noticed. Achieving this doesn't even require a big budget, as long as you have a good idea and think viral-minded. As proven by this viral ad for girl band The Mentalists. And no, it's not an Apple commercial ;-)

INSPIRATION: The Hyde Tube

hydetube

Paris-based production company Mr. Hyde has launched an interesting new initiative, The Hyde Tube, which invites directors anywhere in the world to submit their work for possible inclusion in a juried online “film festival.” If you're a creative and you have some spare time, there's certainly some inspiration to be found here.

This week's Video of the Week is a good starting point. A modern 3D take on those classic 1930s jazzy black & white cartoons. Enjoy.

ANIMATION: David Oreilly - Please Say Something

My first post on this blog and something you absolutely have to watch! This short film won the Golden Bear for best short film at the latest Berlinale Festival. It's a uniquely animated film that couldn't get any further away from the Pixar-style than this. I would describe it as eclictic-art. It's 3D in its purest, almost mathematical form but with a narrative and sensitivity that lacks in most of today's big budget animated content.

Please take the time to watch it beyond the first 60 seconds!

More dazzling work of this young (23 years old!) and very talented animator/director can be seen here. Be sure to take a look at his short WOFL 2106 & the music video he made for Venetian Snares.
